This quilt started as a design study in May 2018 when Michelle used a found object as the foundation for a modern quilt. Michelle explored variations of the design and eventually settled on this one. She brought it to life with a beginner paper-piecing pattern for the June 2019 Quilt of the Month.

About the Contributor

Michelle lives in North Carolina with her husband and 11-year-old son. She loves being part of the quilting community and has a passion for Modern Quilting. She started quilting in 2012, and has gained a lot of experience and had many wonderful opportunities in that time. Her favorite part of quilting is designing and turning those designs into reality. She gets great joy in knowing that the quilts that she makes have a dual purpose, as a piece of art and something that gives comfort to the person who is lying beneath it.

She has taught several STEM related classes over 25 years to a variety of audiences (kids, undergraduates to adults). She now teaches a variety of quilting workshops, covering techniques of quilt designing, improvisational piecing, hand piecing and more. Michelle is a regular contributor to Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine and the MQG. She shares her experiences and what she learns via her blog (Factotum of Arts) and Instagram (@ml_wilkie).

Some of her other interests include Science Fiction/Fantasy movies and books, photography, traveling, and baking/cooking.
