We challenged six MQG members to design a quilt block using the following parameters: Base the design on a basic shape (e.g. square, triangle, circle, hexagon, and others) Have it measure 12 ½” x 12 ½” unfinished Use a specific color palette Nouvel, designed by Tzitzi Bejarano, reimagines the hexagon shape. “The hexagon—a versatile fundamental shape—has been employed across various fields, including architecture, design, spiritual symbolism, technology, and science. The Institute of the Arab World in Paris, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, boasts a striking ultramodern façade made up of mechanical oculi equipped with photoelectric cells which automatically open and close in response to light intensity. This innovative design serves as the inspiration for this block. The block is crafted to explore negative space using the background fabric, while you are encouraged to experiment with the color palette.”
