When you hear the word “quilt,” what comes to mind? For many, quilts are a mirror of our human experience. They are portals that offer a window into the complexities of our individual and collective stories. Quilts are silent witnesses during moments of joyful celebration, and they remain a soft place to land when enveloped in grief. Front porches, kitchen tables and community centers continue to bear witness to stitches, seams and blocks being shaped with love and intention. Join Dr. Sharbreon Plummer as she offers a special curator’s presentation of the exhibition “Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South.” Featuring over 50 handmade quilts from MMA’s permanent collection, including several collected by American photographer Roland L. Freeman, this presentation discusses how the exhibition explores how Black, Southern material culture is manifested through quilts and quiltersÕ lived experiences. In a time where interest in Black quilt traditions ebb and flow, Dr. Plummer asks: how might we champion those who have remained rooted in their purpose and significance?
