Paper Cranes by Sylvia Schaefer, 2013

I have long enjoyed origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. In Japanese tradition, strings of a thousand origami cranes are thought to bring good luck. I wasn't about to paper piece quite that many blocks, but thought this design captured the sentiment. To design the pattern, I folded a crane, then photographed it and drew a paper pieced block based on the photograph. The cranes are echoed by the quilting in the empty blocks.
