How to start a guild branch in your area!

Want to meet modern quilters in your area but don’t see a link to an existing branch?  Why not start your own?  Here are the nuts and bolts on how to get started.  This is all based on our experiences getting the L.A. branch up and running so please adapt to fit your needs!

Step 1: Contact us and let us know you’re starting a new branch.  We’ll post here and help to spread the word to get people interested and involved.

Step 2: Start an online group for your branch.  You can use BigTent.com, Wackwall.com or webs.com, social networking sites that allow for members to sign up, create a profile and upload photos.  They also allow for easy discussions and planning with forum and events.

Step 3: Plan your first meeting. This means finding a place to meet.  We would suggest you start by asking at the local modern fabric shops or quilt shops as they all like having potential customers in their store once a month. General craft shops are another great option.  Also think about community centers, libraries or church meeting rooms.

At your first meeting you will:

Step 4: Determine who your officers are going to be. Chances are these will be the people who have done some of the work to get your branch started.  The LAMQG has a president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary.  As we grow we may add additional roles in order to spread the work load. We will elect officers once a year.

Step 5: Determine what you want out of your guild. How often do you want to meet?  What do you want to do at those meetings?

As an example, here’s what the LAMQG decided to do.

Monday Meetings:

We meet one Monday evening a month at Home Ec. for two hours.  At those meetings we deal with business, show & tells, people speak, we have fabric swaps and so on.  Lots of fun and inspirational times, but no sewing together at these meetings.

Weekend Sews:

We also meet one weekend day a month (alternating Saturdays & Sundays) in a room that we rent from a church.  At those meetings we all bring our gear – sewing machines, cutting mats, irons and ironing boards and we sew sew sew!  Some of these meetings are “free sews”, some are workshops on specific topics.  And at some we will sew charity quilts.  The options are endless!  These meetings are six hours long giving people lots of time to get some sewing done.

As our guild seems to attract younger members, we encourage meeting on week nights and weekends so that people with jobs and small children are able to attend.  Also consider your location and try to be central – if you can’t be, try to be fair.  Here in L.A, our Monday Meetings & Weekend Sews are on opposite sides of town so the commute alternates for members.

Step 6: Determine your dues and what they will cover.  For the LAMQG they are $50 a year and they cover all meetings. For some events with speakers we might require a small fee to attend, as needed.  We might also hold fundraisers as needed.

The first guild meeting for a potential new member is free.  The second & third are $5.00 each.  After that new members must join the guild to keep attending meetings.

Step 7: Set up a bank account for the guild. Your treasurer should head up this work.  These small first expenses for the guild can be covered by having the officers pay their dues right away.  Be sure you’re keeping a budget and track of all expenses.

Step 8: Consider becoming an nonprofit organization.  This is an involved process and we have a write up on how to do that here.  Please don’t let this step slow you down from starting with meetings and the good times, just make sure that you do get to it.

Step 9: Get started and have a blast!! These guilds are about friendships, inspiration and fun through quilting.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to leave them in the comments or email us.

I’d love to get a group started in Nebraska. Would you please send me your email addy so I can contact you (the “contact us” link wants my computer to send the email (and I don’t have it set up for that), rather than my preferred email addy)

We’d love to have all those in the surrounding area help put St. Louis back on the map.

  18. Courtney Says:

The tiny tiny part of me still alive that was president of the art club in high school (and totally great at it although I had no real responsibility) really wants to do this. But, it seems so involved. Officers, schedules, dues and bank accounts all from the first meeting? I’m imagining like…3 people showing up, us talking about the blogs we read and what we’re working on, and then figuring out when we should get together to do it again. I guess that’s not really a guild though, is it? Do you have any advice for someone who would want to just…test the waters so to speak, in their area? I work full time as a seamstress, between that and responsibilities at home, I just don’t have the means to follow this guide alone. Thanks!

(also bummed the big-city guilds meet on week days….I’d love to make weekend trips to KC!)

    • themodernquiltguild Says:

      Hi Courtney!

Completely understand your sentiments! It is a lot of work – but we do want to be an official guild, rather than a bee. We plan for the MQG to last, so it’s in this sort of formal organization that that will happen. You don’t have the whole list of tasks done by your first meeting – we in LA certainly didn’t. But you’ll be surprised at the numbers – they’ve been high everywhere! And if you’d like we could post a ning.com group for your city (easiest way to start a web site for a branch) and when others join it you can mention you need help getting things going. I’ll drop you an email too so that you can communicate about that if you’d like to. Thanks!

  19. Ulrike Says:

Hi, I have created a ning group for Frankfurt/Germany:

    http://frankfurt-mqg.ning.com/

As I am new to ning, I will need a few days to get into it and change the setup, but the first step is done.

  20. Sandi Says:

Frankly, I’m with Courtney as far as the complexity of this thing. I’d much rather give it some time to gel before our local (fairly small, so far) group turns it into a business. Are we REQUIRED to collect dues? Could you please talk a bit about the tax implications for a group that collects dues? I understand if we become a non-profit group, that would have different issues.

    • themodernquiltguild Says:

      Hello Sandi!

So glad you wrote – I’m sure you’re not the only one with these types of questions. We’ll leave it up to you to decide how you develop your local group. But, keep in mind that we are specifically organized as The Modern Quilt “Guild” and our goal is to support and unify the modern quilt guilds.

As for collecting dues there seem to be two questions. One, is are you required to collect dues. And the second seems to be what are the tax implications of collecting dues.

To answer your first question, operating as a guild, you should collect dues – even if they are minimal at the beginning. There will likely be some expenses incurred such as cost of meeting space, speakers, and general guild costs (name tags, so on). Dues will help to cover these and help you to run effectively.

For the second question, the IRS allows a small nonprofit organization the benefits of tax exemption without filing the Form 1023 if their annual gross revenue is normally not more than $5,000 (See Instructions for Form 1023, page 1 at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1023.pdf). With that being said, (here’s the disclaimer :-) ) we cannot offer legal advice and strongly recommend that you seek counsel for help with understanding the legal and tax implications not only on a federal level but, on a state level as well. One good contact for figuring this out is your local SCORE (http://www.score.org) office. They offer free online and face-to-face business counseling, mentoring, and training. The one in Los Angeles has someone that deals specifically with non-profits. Your local SCORE should be able to offer assistance or direct you to someone who can.

Starting a guild can seem daunting but, it is easily manageable if you get a key group to help you organize. This way you can spread the work out amongst the group and it wont be a burden on anyone.

We hope this helps answer your questions and hope this doesn’t deter you from diving into starting a guild! It’s so much fun!

  22. Amy P Says:

I’m so excited about the possibility of this- have you had any interest from the Des Moines Ia area? I’d be interested in starting a branch or at least finding others with the same quilting style to start off with. thanks!

@Ashley Ully The Calgary Modern Quilt Guild can be found at http://calgarymodernquiltguild.ning.com/. You can also see the link on the right hand side of this page (all the guilds are listed in alphabetical order).

  27. Karen Andersen Says:

Hi, I am also in Australia and would absolutely love to start up a Modern Quilt Guild. I live in Hervey Bay, Queensland. I am part of a small sewing group now, but I am the only young mum there (I am 34 with 2 children in primary school and planning to have a third baby in the next 2 years). I would dearly love to find some other young women who love fabric, colour, and quilting as much as I do.

How do I get started in setting up a group?

    Karen.

  28. Rebecca Says:

This may seem a bit lazy since there are already guilds on the SF peninsula and the East Bay, but is there anyone in San Francisco interested in starting up a guild here? I would love to meet some other modern quilters, but I can’t get to Redwood City or Berkeley easily. Thanks!

  29. Julie Says:

I would absolutely love to participate in a Modern Quilt Guild in San Diego! Has anyone started looking into this? Would anyone be interested? I’m toying with the idea of starting one, but I don’t know if I could do it alone. I would go to the LA meetings, but I don’t get off work in time to beat the traffic.

  30. Melissa Says:

Anyone in the Panhandle of Florida up for joining a guild? I’m seriously interested in one exisiting though a little nervous about being the one to start it.

    • Kelly Says:

melissa, i don’t know how else to contact you, but i will possibly be moving to the ft. walton area next year, and have been seriously considering starting one, because i’m a member of the los angeles one now, and will HAVE to have one if i move there! i’m originally from pensacola, so i know the area really well, and i figured the guild will probably have to include the whole panhandle. :)

anyways, i’d love to talk to you! if you see this, you can email me at kelly.spear@gmail.com. i hope i hear from you!

  31. Zelda Says:

Is there anyone in the Muskoka region of Ontario up for starting and joining a quild?

  32. jmbmommy Says:

    Hi there,
I am in Eugene, Oregon. I have spoken to a local quilting store about a possible meeting space and I know that there are some MQG types in the area. What I am wondering is this (more research will follow, I am sure) How long was it between setting up an online group and the first meeting? I am going to check out other MQG site and see if I can’t figure this out. Thanks!

    • Holly Says:

Hi jmbmommy! Good luck with getting your local MQG started! I started a ning group for the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild in January and we’re having our first meeting June 17th (five months later). However, part of the delay was because we were waiting for a new modern fabric store to open, because they are going to host us. Have fun!

    • Corinne Says:

Good luck with your chapter! I started the ning group and randomly picked 10 members as the threshold to hold a meeting, and we had that many in the first 2 weeks. We met about a month after that, for our first “get-to-know-you” organization meeting.
We now have about 30 people on ning, but still get very low numbers at meetings (6-8). It’s only been a few months, so I’m hoping that picks up. I think we started at the wrong time – there are lots of moms in our group and I think summers are hard for them. But, we’ll keep at it. Let us know how yours goes.

  33. daniellewilkes Says:

San Antonio, anyone? I can’t start it alone, but if I had a friend…

  34. Jay Dodds Says:

I have a couple of questions…I belong to a small group of fiber artists who also quilt…we are curious about your organization, but wonder if this is a place for a small grouo (13) who would prefer to not be quite as definitely organized as your group…dues, officers etc. We are interested in perhaps joining Modern Quilt Guild so we can access to other groups, pictures etc as well as share our pictures of what we do with everyone. Please advise.

  35. Natalie Says:

I would love to start a Northern VA group centered in the Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County area. I would like to set this up as The NOVA Modern Quilt Guild. There is a D.C. Modern Quilt Guild and I see that someone was interested in a Fredricksburg Modern Quilt Guild but I think this area is big enough that we could benefit from having all 3 guilds. I am hoping there are others in my area who are interested!

  36. Heather Says:

Anyone in Baltimore, Maryland or surrounding areas interested? I’d love to be a part of one!

  37. Courtney Says:

Brighton is kind of far for me – Is there anyone near Rochester, MI interested in starting a branch?

  38. Jennifer Says:

Anyone in the Denver area looking to start a guild? I would love to become a member.

  39. Adrienne Says:

I would love to start a guild on Ottawa, Ontario (or become a member). Do you know if anyone else has shown an interest in my area? (I think the closest is Toronto which is too far away)

    • Nicole Says:

Hi there – I am in Ajax Ontario with a cottage near Norwood (Hwy 7 30 km e of peterborough) only a bit closer to you but…..

    • Alicia Says:

I would be interested! I know your comment is old, but are you still thinking of starting something? I know there’s a group in Orleans, I am in Manotick, so hoping for a group around here. Barrhaven or Riverside South maybe.

  40. Terri Harlan Says:

I am leaving the portland MQG sadly to move to Bakersfield, Looking for the closest one to me, is the closest LA sadly I wont have the time to start one and help run right now but maybe in the future. How do we go about finding people in that community?
Thanks for all the help :)

Hi! We are just starting a guild in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada, which is about an hour and a half drive from Vancouver. A friend and I started going in to the Vancouver meetings but the return trip drive being so far we thought it might be a great idea to start one in our area to cover the entire Valley to include more quilters out our way who couldn’t do the long trip every month.
If anyone out this way is interested, please feel free to come join us!

What about a branch here in Italy? It would be the first one!!!

  45. Terri Harlan Says:

Ok I have found a group of ladies here in bakersfield CA to start a group everyone is super excited. What is the next step? How do I see if there is even more interest. I was told by local quilt shops that people drive all the way to LA for meetings just to go to one.

We really need an MQG here in Bakersfield CA

    Thanks

  46. Sarah Ritchie Says:

I am very new to quilting but LOVE it with a passion. I am in the process in making my first quilt. I was always nervous to start quilting because I thought it was all old ladies making ugly pastel quilts…mind you they have their place too- it’s just not my thing. Lately I’ve become so inspired by the new wave of quilters. I’m in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. The quilters guild here is very hard to break into (I’ll just leave it at that) and I would love to start a MODERN quilting guild. Anyone up here in this neck of the woods interested??

    • Chelsea Says:

      Hi Sarah,

Did you ever get a modern guild started in the Comox Valley? I’m moving to Parksville and would love to join one, even if it means making the treck up island!

      • Sarah Says:

        Hi Chelsea,

I haven’t started one yet because I joined a roller derby team that takes up most of my evenings and weekends (at least for the next 4-5 months) It’s pretty new to me so I’m waiting to see what kind of time commitment I’m dealing with and what I can afford to do afterwards ( I have 2 young kids and am starting school in September) But having said all that I am still SUPER interested in starting or joining a guild. Maybe once you move up we can keep in touch and possibly work something out with possibilities of location in Courtenay, Parksville or Qualicum.

      • Sarah Ritchie Says:

        Hi Chelsea,

Are you still interested in joining/starting a Modern Quilting Guild? I just moved to Qualicum Beach and am REALLY going to put some effort into getting this going. Let me know if you’re still interested. :) Sarah

    • Justine Says:

At the moment I live in North Van but we are currently in the process of trying to move back to the Comox Valley (we spend half our time there anyway). I’m pretty new to sewing/quilting and have been looking for something like this to join. If you are thinking about starting a guild I’d love to be involved!

      • Sarah Says:

        Hi Justine,
I haven’t started one yet but am becoming more and more interested. Let me know when you move here and maybe we can get something started together. I don’t think I have the time to do it all myself but am interested in being a founding member! you can email me directly when you know what is happening with your move- sarahritchie@me.com

      • Holly Says:

        Hi Justine,

We’d love to have you come to a Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild meeting while you’re still living on the Mainland! Our next meeting is our special one year anniversary celebration and it’s on June 16th. http://www.vmqg.ca

    • Holly Says:

Sarah – did you see Chelsea’s reply at the end of this post? There’s a Nanaimo MQG starting up and they’re looking for interested quilters! I mentioned it at our last Vancouver MQG meeting so hopefully some of our members will tell their island friends.

      • Sarah Ritchie Says:

Thanks for pointing out the Nanaimo branch. I’ve made contact and can’t wait to meet up!

      • Holly Says:

That’s great that you’ve made contact with the Nanaimo MQG, Sarah! Good luck as you island quilters get that guild going!

  47. Deb Richey Says:

I am going to start a branch in Huntsville, AL.
I have a few people already interested and am in contact with a few local shops for meetings and workshops. We’re going to be a very active group!

  48. Karie Says:

Are there any Western New Yorkers who are interested in Starting something?

  49. Bridgette Lewis Says:

I am in Manchester, TN halfway between Chattanooga,TN and Nashville,TN. I would love to have one here but not sure if anyone is interested as I am fairly new to the area. I am an hour from Chattanooga and about an hour or more from Nashville. Is there anyone who is interested in starting one with me here in Middle, TN?

  50. Tiffany Sherman Says:

I’m interested in a Modern Quilt Guild in Richmond, VA… more specifically the west-end area (Short Pump or Glen Allen). Are there any more folks out there in the area??

    • Cheryl S. Says:

Tiffany, we’re planning to start one and have a meeting set up, but it would be on the south side (Midlothian). If you want to email me (cherylandrt (at) verizon (dot) net), we can talk!

  51. Nicole Says:

    Hi all,
I live in Ajax Ontario, east of Toronto and while I work there attending meetings there etc while having little kiddos at home doesn’t work. Anyone interested in doing something out East of the city? I run an online shop i hope to turn into bricks and mortar in the next year, so a venue will be reliably available then…in the interim I might be able to access space at my kids school for a nominal fee….let me know if there is any interest please….and HELP!!!!

  52. Angela Says:

Can I start one in Fort Worth, TX?

  53. Janet Mease Says:

I am the owner of Shiisa Quilts in Bloomington IN — and we’d love to help a Modern Quilt Guild get started in our area! If anyone is interested in organizing, we’ll be happy to provide the space!

  54. Raven Says:

Hi I,d like to register a branch in Norwich UK . I run ( by their consent ) a team of crafters and bag makers in the area and would like to expand the repetoire to modern quilts … i,m not a traditional quilter though I can if provoked.
Love the work . Hoorah for modern quilting . Making quilting accessible .

  55. Dave Says:

My wife and I own Boardwalk Quilts in Long Beach, WA and we already open our class area to open-sew Tuesdays every week and after-hours Fridays on the first Friday of each month. We know that there are a number of quilters in the Long Beach Peninsula/Astoria, OR area that can’t join the local guild because they work during the day. We would love to be a meeting place for a new MQG group. Just contact us at 360-642-7997 or email me at dave@boardwalkquilts.com.

  56. @pril Bowerman Says:

Is there such a thing as an Online Quilt Guild? My thinking is doing one online for a specific group of people worldwide, not just a local guild. Would you allow this type of guild to be added to your website? In the future, I plan to move overseas and will do a regular quilt guild for that location, but for now, would like to do one online.

    • themodernquiltguild Says:

Hi April – the MQG developed out of a desire to move all of the modern quilting communities’ online activities to “in person” experiences. In a way, flickr and blogs already are an online guild in that we’ve all gotten to know each other through organized swaps and so on. Therefore, we’re sticking with the “in person” guilds so that this thriving community can meet each other face to face. Let us know if you have questions! Thanks!

      • @pril Bowerman Says:

Gotcha! Thanks for responding so quickly. I know in a few months I plan to move to the Los Angeles area and they have a wonderful modern quilt guild there, so will do that. Then when I move overseas, I will start an actual guild there. Thanks for the info. Keep up the great work!

I’d love to join or start a group in Nanaimo BC. Is there anyone else out there thinking the same?

    • Holly Says:

      Hi Sam!

I’m from the island and I started the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild last year. I’d be happy to see a MQG start on Vancouver Island (I’m surprised there isn’t a Victoria one yet!). Let me know if you have any questions! hollybroadland (at) gmail (dot) com.

      • Carli Heinrichs Says:

        Hi Holly,

I was surprised as well that none seem to have started up in Victoria. I was just down there and talked about to quilters, so we’ll see what happens.
But we’ve started one in the beautiful Bulkley Valley in Northern BC. We’ve started a blog, here is our details to follow us and vice versa. http://www.bvmodernquilters.blogspot.com

      • Holly Says:

        Hi Carli,

Good luck with your Bulkley Valley guild! Since I wrote my note above in May, I’ve heard that there’s an informal group of modern quilters meeting monthly at Satin Moon Quilt Shop in Victoria.

Valerie – I’m working to help start a NJ chapter. Right now it looks like it might be in Pennington NJ (I live in central Jersey too and that’s about 40 min from me) but could possibly alternate locations if there is interest far from there. Stop by my blog and email me if you want me to keep you posted. Possibly a first organizational meeting in november.

  76. Kerstin Says:

Hi there, is anyone interested to start a branch in Stuttgart or Tuebingen, Germany? I moved from San Diego to Tuebingen and this area definitely needs a Modern Quilt Guild…

  77. Carli Heinrichs Says:

Thanks Ladies for starting this MQG idea! I moved to northern BC in 2003 and was devastated that no real quilting guild existed. I’ve decided its time and so I’ve started a blog called Modern Quilters of Bulkley Valley, I’m located in Telkwa, but anyone from Burns Lake to Hazelton would be in the Bulkley Valley and most welcome to attend and participate!
I am so glad that I’ve read that a formal process is part of MQG organizational structure. It is so important to have people wiling to do a small part of any group.
I look forward to any comments or quilter who wish join.

Hi I am thinking of starting a Modern Quilt Guild in the Uk, Darlington. Any advice about costs and how to attract quilters would be great. Thank you

    • themodernquiltguild Says:

Hi Helen, I think that the first way to attract people is to get me a website for your new guild so that people who visit the main site can find you and join up. Also, that way you have help to get things up and running!
