Here we go everyone – it’s time for Challenge 2!
Design and make a quilt that is monochromatic. Create interest, life and energy in a quilt by using tints, shades and tones of a single color.
Meet our judge, Malka Dubrawsky:
Eighth grade art class introduced Malka Dubrawsky to art and she hasn’t been the same since. She went on to graduate from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art. It was being at home with children that pushed her into working with textiles.
For several years Malka worked primarily as a fiber artist and was lucky enough to be included in some prestigious shows and publications such as Quilt National and Visions and Fiberarts: Design Book 7.
More recently she’s been busy making more functional textiles though still primarily out of her own hand dyed and patterned fabric. To this end she has turned her attention to crafting quilts, pillows and other sundries for sale via her online store, http://stitchindye.etsy.com. Malka writes and designs patterns and has been published in magazines such as Quilting Arts, Stitch, and several books including Sweater Surgery and Quilts! Baby, Pretty Little Mini Quilts, Whip Up Mini Quilts, and Quilting Art by Spike Gillespie. Her first book, Color Your Cloth: A Quilter’s Guide to Dyeing and Patterning Fabric, was published by Lark Books in November of 2009 and a second book, Fresh Quilting: Fearless, Color, Design, and Inspiration was released this past December by Interweave Press. Read more about Malka and her work at http://stitchindye.blogspot.com.
The Prizes:
Each of the three winners will receive a fabulous prize package, featuring the following products:
A copy of Malka’s wonderful new book Fresh Quilting: Fearless Color, Design, and Inspiration.

Are neutrals allowed?
January 5, 2011 at 10:46 am |
Hi Lindsay! Only if it’s the one color you pick. So if your neutral is gray, the whole quilt would have to be gray(s).

I love the idea of a monochromatic quilt! I just might have to join the challenge!

Are neutrals allowed? I mean, say I pick blue as my color. Can I also use white, or black, or gray?
January 5, 2011 at 10:48 am |
Hi Margaret! Nope – just one color! That one color can be a neutral, but it can’t be in addition to another color.
Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry for repeating Lindsay’s question–we were on the same wavelength.

Do the fabrics have to include the same color. For example if I chose purple and one of the fabrics has small white snow flakes would it not count?
January 5, 2011 at 12:21 pm |
Hi Sofia! Good question. Use your discretion and just keep in mind that the goal is a monochromatic quilt. If the white pops enormously then it could take away from the success of that goal – but if the fabric pretty much reads as purple then it could work. It’s up to you to make the call as to if a fabric works! Have fun!

This caught my attention
How strictly monochrome should we be going? In other words, does it have to be actually monochromatic and stick with the same hue of color (like on a paint chip sample)? Or are we just sticking with the same color family (like all blues)?
And, will black, grey, and white together count as monochromatic?

Hi Natalie – we’re going to leave it to your interpretation. That’s part of the fun of the challenge!

So much on my plate but I have to try it! Now I just have to pick a color!

Super excited to work on this quilt challenge. The Judge’s work is really top notch. This will be fun!

I’ve never participated in a challenge before, but my New Year’s resolution was to try new things, so I’m going to enter. I bought the fabric this morning. I’m excited to try one of the new designs that have been rolling around in my head.

Sounds awesome! 3 months to work it out…. now… to choose a color! Maybe even something out of my comfort zone

What wonderful prizes for the monochromatic challenge!
January 9, 2011 at 5:44 pm |
2011 is the year for me to travel “outside” my norm! I am going to give this a try! Good luck to all!!

My question may be the same as a previous one,but if I pick a color (say yellow) and I get several yellow prints, is that not allowed because some white or black may be in the print?
January 13, 2011 at 3:15 am |
What a fantastic challenge! And it will really stretch me to use my fabric stash. I may never finish such a quilt in time for the deadline, but I will have fun with it in my own time all the same.

Hi there, I am in Australia, now I am not entitled to the prizes, ok, but can I still enter?
January 16, 2011 at 8:30 pm |
Hi Sonia! Of course – we’d love for you to enter! So sorry that non US residents aren’t eligible for the prizes… there’s no legal way around it. Thanks!

Does the quilt have to be of original design or may I use a published pattern as long as I interpret it in a monochromatic color scheme?
January 23, 2011 at 8:57 pm |
Hi Chelley – the quilt has to be your own design. Thanks!

I am making a monochromatic quilt at the moment (well, except the red star!) for my baby.
