Portland Modern Quilt Guild

by

This is a quick summary of what’s going on with the Portland (Oregon) Modern Quilt Guild.

Our first meeting on March 18 was attended by 25 enthusiastic quilters, who took turns showing off their recent work.  It was wonderful to meet so many other quilters in one place!

At our April meeting, Cherri is going to lead a psuedo-White-Elephant-style potholder swap.  We aren’t going to introduce the stealing element common to White Elephant, but  we are going to bring our quilty potholders wrapped in a nondescript way and will take turns choosing one from the pile, which should be a lot of fun!

We also decided to have a fabric swap table at each meeting.  The idea behind the fabric swap table is that fabric sitting in one quilter’s closet unused may be just what another quilter needs to complete a project.  At the end of each meeting, leftover fabric will be donated to a good cause like Project Linus or Scrap.

We’re lucky enough to have secured a meeting space at PNCA for our April meeting.  Besides the potholder swap, we plan to elect officers at that time.

In the meantime, we had a lot of fun with a Quilting Saturday Night event at Modern Domestic, a local sewing studio.  This was an open-sew event where everyone worked on their own projects in a fun, social atmosphere.  (You can read more about the event on the Modern Domestic Blog, and see more photos from members in our Portland Modern Quilters Flickr Pool).  The event went so well that we’ve decided to make it a monthly thing.

So, to sum it up, we’re just getting started in Portland, but we’re having a great time!  I’m hoping the enthusiasm we’ve seen thus far continues as we build our local guild into a fun and active organization.

Special thanks to Lupine Swanson of Modern Domestic and Joan Callaway of PMQG for the photos in this post!

So- do you have a schedule of meetings? I’d love to join an enthusiastic group- which yours seem to be, but don’t live in Portland and so would need some advance notice. Let me know? Eileen
